School of Agriculture and Forestry offers three bachelor level degree programmes: Degree programme in Agriculture and Rural Enterprises, Degree programme in Forestry and Degree Programme in Forest Product Marketing.
Degree Programme in Agriculture and Rural Enterprises
The aim of the degree programme is to prepare experts for tasks relating to advising, administration, education, development cooperation, commerce, rural entrepreneurship and research. The degree also qualifies the students for work as private entrepreneurs.
The degree of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture aims at sound professional skills, with the emphasis on the practical application of research based information.
There are two specialisation study lines, Production Economics and Production Technology. In addition, there are free choice studies from about 100 courses.
The programme is 240 credits (ECTS) and its duration is about 4 years:
Year 1: theoretical studies from August to the end of April followed by practical training on farms 1.5-30.9
Year 2: theoretical studies from October to the end of May followed by summer courses at school 1.6-31.8.
Year 3: theoretical studies from October to the end of April followed by specialised training 1.5-31.8.
Year 4: from September to the end of July (last lessons are in December
Degree Programme in Forestry
The specialisation lines of the Degree Programme in Forestry are: Forestry Production and Nature and Rural Tourism. The extent of the Degree Programme is 240 credits (ECTS). According to the their subject areas, the studies are grouped into study modules, which are further divided into study units, which are either compulsory, optional or free choice study units.
The objective of the programme is to provide future forestry engineers with sound basic skills required for tasks in forestry and nature rural tourism plus up-to-date expertise in the sectors selected by the student. The programme is aimed at improving the students’ independent data gathering, cooperative and communicative skills as well as their working life connections in Finland and abroad. In addition to the basic studies, the key studies of the Forestry Production line are Silviculture, Wood Procurement and Forest Planning. In the line of ecotourism, the emphasis is on knowledge of tourism, the use of nature as a leisure time environment, production of nature experiences and ecotourism.
In addition, common and important subject areas in both lines are entrepreneurship, marketing, leadership, communication skills and environmental protection.
Degree Programme in Forest Product Marketing
The aim of the Forest Product Marketing Programme is to educate professionals for the forest cluster’s managerial and expert duties. Thus the Curriculum of Forest Product Marketing is very wide covering the whole chain of custody from forests to markets including marketing of forest products, processing of wood and wood procurement. The extent of the programme is 240 credits (ECTS).
Students become familiar with modern marketing strategies and techniques both in business to business and in consumer markets. In wood processing studies the focus is on sawmilling and panel production as well as in the upgrading of sawn goods and different kind of panel products including Engineered Wood Products (EWP), log and pre-fabricated houses, wooden windows and doors as well as fittings and furniture production. Mechanical wood-working products are studied thoroughly from different points of view including production functions, raw-material requirements and product properties in order to provide the students with comprehensive product knowledge.
Students can also study mechanical woodworking machines and equipment technology and special features of their marketing. Forestry studies focus on product and customer oriented wood procurement. Entrepreneurship is an essential part of the curriculum because of the dominating position of small and medium sized companies in woodworking in general and especially in upgrading sector.
