Research Group of Entrepreneurship

At SeAMK Business, there is a research group of entrepreneurship, established separately by the Board of the University of Applied Sciences. The research group is networked to Finnish and foreign universities and research units. The research group is led by D.Sc. Elina Varamäki, who also acts an Adjunct Professor at the University of Vaasa. The other members of the research group are D.Sc. Erno Tornikoski, D.Sc. Kirsti Sorama, M.Soc.Sc., Dr.Sc. Anmari Viljamaa, D.Sc. Aapo Länsiluoto and M.Sc. Matleena Saarakkala.

The aim is to produce up-to-date research knowledge applicable to the educational supply of the units of the University of Applied Sciences and to SME sector-related development projects implemented by the entire University of Applied Sciences.

ONGOING RESEARCH PROJECTS

 Regional Determinants of Company Growth in Finland
Period of implementation: 2007–2008
Financing: TEKES
Partners: University of Vaasa
Description: The aim of the project is to find out reasons for the success of the companies with the fastest growth. The study is based on the recognition of regional growth companies on the basis of company materials, both by TE Centre Areas and based on the division between the metropolitan area, growth areas and other areas.

Paths of Growth and Obstacles to Growth of Small Enterprises in the Hotel and Restaurant Sector
Period of implementation: 2007–2008
Financing: OPM, SeAMK
Description: The principal aim of the study is to determine the typical paths of growth of small enterprises in the hotel and restaurant sector. Another aim is to find out how entrepreneurs in the sector evaluate the growth potential of their own companies, their own willingness to grow, the opportunities of growth offered by the environment, as well as the key obstacles to growth.

Sub-project: Models of Growth and Networking of Small Enterprises in the Field of Social Services and Health Care

Description: The aim of the sub-project is

– To compare the growth company profile of South Ostrobothnian enterprises in the field of social services and health care to the other Finnish regions

– To find out about the potential, willingness and opportunities for growth and networking of the companies in the sector

– To analyze potential paths and models of growth in this sector

– To generate development ideas in order to promote potential and willingness for growth and networking in the sector
