Bachelor Programmes

Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences, School of Health Care and Social Work offers four Bachelor level degree programmes: Degree Programme in Physiotherapy, Degree Programme in Nursing, Degree Programme in Social Work and Degree Programme in Elderly Care.

Degree Programme in Physiotherapy
210 credits (ECTS), including 75 credits of practical training

The graduates of this degree programme become registered physiotherapists. They are experts of mobility and functional capacity. They support and counsel their patients/clients in achieving and maintaining good mobility and functional capacity. Preventive work is an important part of the physiotherapist’s role.

Physiotherapists work in the health and social sector and in the municipal provision of sports services.

Degree Programme in Nursing
Nursing: 210 credits (ECTS), including 75 credits of practical training
Public Health Nursing: 240 credits (ECTS), including 90 credits of practical training
A full nursing degree programme 210 credits (ECTS) in English will be started in autumn 2009.

Registered nurses and public health nurses are independent experts of nursing and public health nursing in primary health care, specialised medical care, social services and in the private and the third sector. They help, support and guide sick and healthy people of all ages, families, groups and communities. Their central tasks include promotion and maintenance of health, prevention of illness, rehabilitation and implementation of the medical care prescribed for patients. Nurses and public health nurses plan, implement and develop nursing and public health nursing in national and international settings.

Degree Programme in Social Work
210 credits (ECTS), including 45 credits of practical training

The graduates of this degree programme are Bachelors of Social Work and they are called sosionomi in Finnish. They are experts and developers of social welfare, functional capacity and social participation.

They work in the social field, educating, guiding and supporting their clients, managing and developing social services and guiding and counselling people in social security issues. In their work they apply psychosocial, interactive, community-based and creative methods and various organisation and development methods to meet the needs of different clients groups.

The students study and develop citizen and client-oriented work methods and aim at new action models to continuously improve the social care delivery system.

Degree programme in Elderly Care
210 credits (ECTS), including 50-75 credits of practical training

The graduates of this degree programme become Bachelors of Elderly Care and they are called geronomi in Finnish. They are experts of elderly care, whose aim is to promote the health, well-being, functional capacity and social participation of elderly citizens.

The degree programme combines multi-disciplinary gerontological knowledge with practical elderly care qualifications and with the supervision and development of services for elderly people

The experts of elderly care work with individual clients, providing guidance and tailor-made services to support home-care, and as managers and developers of services in municipalities and institutions for elderly clients. They are also specialists of dementia work.
