Web content readers introduced in SeAMK’s key online services
SeAMK offers its users of online services two screen reader software. With the help of these software, you can listen to the text of web pages read aloud in both Finnish and English.
A ReadSpeaker screen reader is used on the SeAMK.fi website and in the Moodle learning environment. SeAMK Intra intranet uses Immersive Reader screen reader software.
Click and listen!
At the top of SeAMK.fi and several other websites’ pages, such as SeAMK Library and Study Guide, as well as on Moodle’s page block there is a Listen button, which you can click to listen to the text. The voice is synthetic and streamed, which means that the function requires an internet connection to work.
You can also listen to the text by selecting the text with the mouse. When you select part of the text, the listen function opens a pop-up menu from which you can select the following functions: listen, language translation, or word search.
Next to the document link (e.g. PDF, Word, PowerPoint) you will find an image of the speaker which you can click to open the document you want to listen to. The function menu can be found in the menu at the top of the document. In the settings you can, for example, select automatic page switching so that you can listen to the entire document in one go. At the edges of each page are scroll buttons that allow you to switch pages – they appear when you move the mouse over the edge of the page.
In addition, you can use Microsoft’s own Immersive Reader screen reader in the documents created with Microsoft software, such as Word and PowerPoint. Adobe Acrobat Reader also has its own accessibility features, including reading text aloud.
