Student assistants improved communication, teamwork and time management skills by working at an international HEROES event

The HEROES European University Alliance semi-annual meeting event was organised at SEAMK in May 2025. To support the event’s success, some student assistants were recruited to work behind the scenes and ensure smooth experience for all attendees. Among them were Tu Doan, Xuemei Tang, and Thinh Tran Duc, who each brought their unique energy and perspectives to the role.
Tu, a second-year International Business student, who is originally from Ha Noi, Vietnam expressed how the opportunity aligned perfectly with her passion for event planning and supporting educational projects. She was thrilled to be selected and took on key responsibilities such as welcoming participants, guiding them to sessions, managing the registration desk, and organising the event space.
Xuemei, Agri-food Engineering student from China, learned about the opportunity through a SEAMK email and joined eagerly, taking care of guest hospitality and logistical arrangements like setting up tables and escorting visitors. Meanwhile, Thinh, a Vietnamese Automation Engineering student since 2022, was motivated by a desire to build connections and better understand Finnish working culture.
All three shared that the team atmosphere was highly supportive and organised, with experienced mentors making the event run smoothly and without major issues. Tu found the most rewarding part to be the positive feedback from attendees and seeing everything come together, while Xuemei enjoyed the entire experience and Thinh appreciated gaining insight into Finnish work practices.
Despite the physical demands of standing and moving around throughout the days, each of them felt proud and accomplished by the end. They also gained valuable skills. Tu highlighted improvements in communication, event management, and teamwork. Xuemei noted the importance of language skills and cultural adaptability and Thinh pointed out how his time management improved. Their advice for future assistants was both practical and encouraging to stay organised, enjoy the moment, bring joy to the guests, be prepared to stand, and always keep a positive attitude.
Their reflections reminded how enriching student involvement can be—not only building skills and networks but also creating memories that last well beyond the event.
