What is the one study right rule?

The One Study Right Rule refers to legislative changes entering into force on 1 August 2026. As a result of these changes, a student’s study rights for higher education degrees at the same or a lower level will end if they accept a new study right leading to a degree.

What does this mean?

If the student is admitted to a programme and accepts the study place, their existing study rights at the same or lower level will be terminated. When the student accepts the study place, they will be shown which study rights will end as a result. The decision to accept the study place – and thereby terminate your previous study rights – is binding and cannot be changed afterwards.

When does the one study right provision enter into force?

The legislation applies to application rounds starting after 1 August 2026, in which students are admitted to degree programmes beginning on 1 January 2027 or later.
